PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanner that can discriminate a left-stitched document on the basis of a laterally arranged character string, a right-stitched document on the basis of a longitudinally arranged character string so as to be capable of correctly reading the order of read spread images, discriminate whether a document is a single slip or a stitched document like a book or a magazine, and output 2-spread pages of a book or the like as a one-page. SOLUTION: The scanner is configured to discriminate the left-stitched document on the basis of the laterally arranged character string and the right-stitched document on the basis of the longitudinally arranged character string by detecting the arranged direction of the character string of the document. The scanner is configured to include two buttons A1, B2 for starting reading and to carry out double-side reading by executing correction of rotating a read image by the button A1 or B2 by 180 degrees when the buttons are alternately depressed in the order of e.g., the button A1, the button B2, the button A1, and the button B2.
