PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of slowing a hydrostatic drive work machine. SOLUTION: This invention relates to the method of slowing the hydrostatic drive work machine and the hydrostatic drive work machine. The method includes the step of slowing the work machine by at least one of upstroking a variable displacement hydraulic motor of the work machine and downstroking a variable displacement pump coupled with the motor. An engagement completed clutch pressure is dropped after each of motor and pump displacement reaches a predetermined point. The step of slowing the work machine is performed by adjusting the respective displacement at rates based on a predetermined acceleration limit and/or a predetermined jerk limit of the work machine.
