A drum 1 rotatably supported on pairs of rollers (2) (Fig. 1, not shown) is rotated slowly by a friction ratchet mechanism comprising a double-acting hydraulic jack 24 (Fig. 5) which acts tangentially on one or more metal strips 6 extending round the drum outer periphery and engageable therewith through friction strips, blocks, or shoes 7 secured to the strip(s) 6 or to the drum 1 to grip the drum during a driving stroke of the jack 24 and to release it during a return stroke. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the strip (6) comprises semi-circular halves articulated together by a turnbuckle (8), lugs 18, 19 on their other ends being interconnected by a double-acting hydraulic jack 26 which controls the gripping and releasing of the drum. Radial rods (11) (Fig. 2, not shown) secured to the strip pass through axles (12) each having a roller (13) which runs on the drum and a flanged wheel (14) which runs on a circumferential rail (15) secured to the drum, adjustable compression springs (16) acting on the rods (11) to urge the strip (6) away from the drum. To obtain continuous rotation, two mechanisms are used, acting alternately. In a second embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) a single metal strip (34) with a friction lining (35) extends around the drum (1) and is supported and urged away from the drum by roller assemblies (39) which run on a fixed guide member (41), rods (36) secured to the strip (34) extending through slots (42) in the guide member to engage the roller assemblies (Figs. 10, 11, not shown). Blocks 45, 46 are secured to the ends of the strip 34 (Fig. 12). the block 45 being pivoted to the ram of an hydraulic jack 51 anchored at 53. Straps 56 pivoted at 54 to the block 45 have slots 57 engaging a pin 58 secured to the block 46, a double-acting hydraulic jack 61, larger than the jack 51, being pivoted to the block 46. When the jacks are both pressurized to act towards one another, the strip 34 grips the drum and is rotated by the stronger jack 61. For the return stroke, the jack 61 is contracted, and acts to extend the jack 51 and to cause the strip 34 to release the drum. |
