A granular urea-formaldehyde foam (see Division C3) is used as a carrier for fertilizer ingredients which may be included before or after foaming. Fertilizer constituents specified are ammonium, sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphate, sulphate, nitrate, chloride, carbonate, and urea.ALSO:A granular, non-burning fertilizer composition is made by preparing a urea-formaldehyde solution having a molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde in the range of 1:1 to 3:1 and incorporating a foaming agent in said solution in an amount sufficient to impart a foamable property to the solution, acidifying said solution to promote the condensation reaction of the urea and formaldehyde, forming said solution into a foam-like product, drying said foam-like product and reducing the dried product to granular form. The foaming agent can be an anionic or a non-ionic or a cationic surfactant. A foam stabilizing agent such as urea-formaldehyde solutions, water and urea-formaldehyde solutions and polyvinylidene chloride latex emulsions can be added to the dry foam. Herbicides, insecticides, nematocides, fertilizers, seeds, growth regulators, fungicides, animal repellents, insect repellents, trace elements and adjuvants can be included in the mixture either before or after the foaming step.ALSO:A granular, non-burning fertilizer composition made from urea-formaldehyde foam contains one or more of the following additives: herbicides, insecticides, nematocides, fertilizers, seeds, growth regulators, fungicides, animal repellents, insect repellents, trace elements and adjuvants. Numerous examples of additives are given.
