1,053,989. Disulphonated dialkyl thioethers. UNILEVER Ltd. June 8, 1965 [June 10, 1964], No. 23962/64. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Disulphonated dialkyl thioethers are prepared by reacting anα-olefin of formula RCH= CH 2 , where R is C 6-18 alkyl, with sulphur dichloride to yield a dichlorinated thioether, and subsequently replacing the chlorine by sulphonic groups. In a first reaction stage anα- olefin or a hydrocarbon mixture of which the unsaturated fraction consists substantially ofα-olefins is suitably reacted with sulphur dichloride, generally at below 50‹ C. and the chlorine atoms are replaced in a second stage by reacting the product with an aqueous solution of a water soluble alkali metal sulphite, preferably at an elevated temp., e.g. reflux temp. The first stage may be effected in an organic solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon or a chlorinated hydrocarbon, and in the second stage the aqueous sulphite solution is preferably admixed with from 5 to 60% v./v. of a water-miscible organic liquid such as a C 1-4 alcohol.
|
