The controller has an electronic control unit (50) connected with a signal source for supplying information regarding operating condition of a drive motor and with a strategy input device (32) for selection between two switching strategies. The control unit selects two different partial amounts of translation stages of power shift and synchronous switching gears (40, 46) with the corresponding selected switching strategies with actuators (52, 60), where one of the translation stages is larger than the other translation stage. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a gear controller for a gear of a drive train of a work vehicle.
