The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1043486/C2/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 each represent a methyl group, R4 and R5 represent C1- 7 alkyl groups, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and the broken lines indicate that the methyl groups attached thereby are optional. The compounds are prepared by reacting a phenol of the general formula <FORM:1043486/C2/2> wherein R50 represents a C1- 7 alkyl or alkonoyl group with an alcohol of the general formula <FORM:1043486/C2/3> or <FORM:1043486/C2/4> or with a C1- 7 alkonoyl ester of either of thes alcohols and, where required, submitting the reaction product to one or more of the operations: (i) alkonoylation and subsequent reduction of the alkanoyl group to alkyl in the case where R4 and/or R50 are absent; (ii) alkylation in the case where R4 and/or R50 are absent; (iii) reduction to alkyl of any alkanoyl group R50 already present, and (iv) hydrolysis of any alkanoyl group R50 already present, the operations being performed in appropriate sequence when more than one operation is to be carried out.
