PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a collision load on an occupant by reducing a lateral impact from the other vehicle when determining that a side collision of the other vehicle with the vehicle concerned is unavoidable. SOLUTION: When a vehicle approaching the own vehicle is detected, the distance to the other vehicle, the travel direction and speed of the other vehicle, and the speed of the own vehicle are computed (11), and if a side collision of the other vehicle is determined unavoidable owing to an insufficient distance for deceleration, a brake control device of the own vehicle applies braking (12) and a steering control device steers so that the travel direction of the own vehicle in the same direction as the other vehicle travels at timing keeping the own vehicle on the traffic lane (13). The operation of an ABS mechanism is controlled to exert the braking effect and steering effect. The steering control device and a steering motor may be replaced by the brake control device, which controls the application of braking to inner wheels and outer wheels for steering.
