PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate with high accuracy an internal EGR amount and an internal EGR rate. SOLUTION: In this method for estimating an internal EGR state of an internal combustion engine provided with a valve timing variable mechanism, the basic index of the internal EGR state is found out based on the valve overlap amount of an intake/exhaust valve and the engine speed of the internal combustion engine, and next, a valve overlap center phase with the inside EGR amount minimized is found out based on the valve overlap amount and the engine speed as a minimum EGR center phase. After that, the internal EGR state is estimated by correcting the basic index according to deviation between the actual valve overlap center phase of the intake/exhaust valve and the minimum EGR center phase.
