PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a strong SNR estimating method for modulated communication signals, having a high precision even on a few number of precessed samples. SOLUTION: The method estimates an SNR which is the ratio of signal against noise in modulated communication signal r<SB>n</SB>, containing data symbol component s<SB>n</SB>and noise component n<SB>n</SB>. An intermediate SNR value (the numeric 1) of modulated communication signal is derived from data assist maximum likelihood estimation. The assist data is re-configured from the sample of modulated communication signal r<SB>n</SB>which is not notified in advance. The estimated SNR value (the numeric 2) is determined by nonlinear conversion of which the intermediate SNR value (the numeric 3) is controlled. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
