PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical filter for a high performance display where, e.g., in a liquid crystal display in which backlight is used for a display light source, unnecessary luminescence emitted by the backlight is effectively intercepted, and the purity of green and red luminescent colors can be raised fully. SOLUTION: The optical filter for a display comprises a dipyrromethane coloring matter expressed by general formula (I), wherein R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>6</SB>independently denote a monovalent group, respectively; and R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>and/or R<SB>4</SB>and R<SB>5</SB>can be coupled with each other and form aromatic rings condensed to pyrrole rings. The aromatic rings may have substitutional groups, and further, the condensed aromatic rings formed thereby can be the same or different. X denotes a trivalent group. M denotes a group 11 metal in the Periodic Table or a boron atom; Y denotes a group coupled with M; and n denotes the integer of 1 to 3.
