A mounting device for an inclined lance 11 for a metallurgical furnace 1 comprises a pair of arms 20, 22, pivotally attached at points 24, 26 to the lance 11, and at points 21, 23 to a furnace frame part 19 so that the fluid exit end 25 of lance 11 moves with a greater vertical than horizontal component of movement over its operational range and with a greater horizontal than vertical component during movement to and from said operational range. The lance 11 is mounted in side aperture. 9 by short arm 20 and larger arm 22, themselves attached to the frame 19. A piston and cylinder 27, 28 pivoted at point 21 is attached to arm 22. With the lance and arms in the withdrawn (broken line) position the hydraulic piston is extended, moving arms 20, 22 clockwise, so lowering lance 11 through aperture 9 into furnace 1, to the operating position shown. From this position further extension of piston and cylinder 27, 28 swings the arms clockwise causing the lance 11 to pivot anti-clockwise about point 26, so causing free end 25 to move down and right, so partly compensating the leftward arm and lance rotation to give an enhanced vertical movement of the free end 25 over a limited operational range. The lance may pass oxygen, inert gas, steam or plasma.</p> |
