PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image display device equipped with an optical sensor for detecting the color temperature of illuminating light so as to adjust the color temperature of the illuminating light for a spatial optical modulating element, which is improved to accurately detect the color temperature, without causing complications and the size increase in the constitution of the device and also avoid influence on display images due to the optical sensor and heat generation of the optical sensor. SOLUTION: The image display device is equipped with a plurality of light sources 1a, 1b and 1c, having emission spectra different from each other, the spatial optical modulating elements 9a, 9b and 9c on which light beams emitted from the respective light sources 1a, 1b and 1c are made incident and which respectively modulate three primary color light beams; a color compositing means 10 for compositing the three primary color light beams, modulated by the spatial optical modulation elements 9a, 9b and 9c; a projection means 11 for projecting the light passing through the color compositing means 10, the optical sensor 12 for detecting the color temperature of stray light passing through the color compositing means 10; and a color temperature control means for controlling the color temperature of the light beams emitted from the light sources 1a, 1b and 1c, based on the result of detection by the optical sensor 12.
