PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a directional coupler in which the size can be reduced while sustaining the performance as a coupler and power loss in the main line can be reduced. SOLUTION: The directional coupler 1 comprises a main line 2 and a subline 3 included in a substantially parallelepiped dielectric 4 wherein external electrodes 5-1 to 5-4 are fixed to the outside of the dielectric 4. More specifically, the main line 2 is substantially formed into a rectangle having terminals 21 and 22 at the opposite ends in the direction of short side, and the line length in the direction of short side is set shorter than a quarter of wavelength of a main signal. The subline 3 has a spiral body 30 and terminals 31 and 32 wherein the axis in the spiral direction intersects the axis of the main line 2 in the direction of short side. The external electrodes 5-1 and 5-2 are connected with the terminals 21 and 22 of the main line 2, and the external electrodes 5-3 and 5-4 are connected with the end faces 31a and 32a of the terminals 31 and 32 of the subline 3.
