A force application element (2) is located between a cam (14) and a cam-actuated lifting valve (13). A fixed pressure line (11) opening into a guide cylinder (4) is subjected to high pressure to activate the valve. A permanent flow connection is provided between the pressure line and a pressure channel (8) independent of the position of the force application element. An independent claim is included for internal combustion engine operation method.
