POSTWEANING MULTISYSTEMIC WASTING SYNDROME VIRUS FROM PIG

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polynucleotide for the isolation and the character determination of a new porcine circovirus II (PCVII) isolated from a pig developing postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS).

SOLUTION: The invention provides an isolated polynucleotide selectively hybridizable to PCVII nucleotide sequence, having a specific sequence and containing ≥8 nearest-neighbor nucleotides. A recombinant PCVII polypeptide can be produced by using the polynucleotide. The polypeptide can be used in vaccine compositions for the prevention or treatment of PCVII infections, as well as in diagnostic methods for determining the presence of PCVII infections in a vertebrate subject. The polynucleotides derived from the PCVII genome can be used also as diagnostic primers and probes.
