PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensiner which is small-sized and light weighted, and excellent in a damping effect. SOLUTION: A plunger 4 and a spring 6 to press the plunger 4 outward are assembled in a cylinder chamber 3 of a housing 1. A lubricating passage 8 is installed in the housing 1 to communicate to a pressure chamber 7 formed at the back of the plunger 4. A cylinder 15 is fitted in the outer periphery of the housing 1, a helical groove 16 is installed in the inner periphery of the cylinder 15, and a semi-radial through hole 17 to communicate the pressure chamber 7 and the helical groove 16 is formed in the housing 1 so as to discharge air retained above the working fluid in the pressure chamber 7 from the through hole 17 and the helical groove 16 outward.
