PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt fixing device having a belt, which is designed such that a transfer material is steadily separated without being wrapped in the fixing belt at the exit of the fixing device. SOLUTION: The fixing device includes a tension alteration means for altering the tension of the fixing belt. Before the leading end of a transfer material is passed through a nip, its tension is reduced. After the trailing end of the transfer material is passed through the nip, the tension is increased.
