Friction clutches 3 connecting the ends of a freely rotatable worm 1 to a drive shaft 2 are disengaged on excess torque by the worm 1 moving axially to move balls 10 against adjustable springs 5 up the sloping side 11 of the annular drive shaft groove 8, and radially, thus axially disengaging annular friction clutch disc linings 7 from one of the worm ends. The other clutch is disengaged by balls 10 being held axially against the straight edge of groove 8 adjacent the worm end. A lever 12 displaced by axial worm movement switches off the wormdrive motor.
