PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent noise in fully opening a sliding door and damage of an open position regulating member or the like of the sliding door, a sliding door frame, or the like even if the opened sliding door is automatically closed by the energizing force of a closing force generating means, and to close the fully opened sliding door after a requested time. SOLUTION: This braking device for the sliding door is provided with a braking means 41 for applying predetermined rotation resistance to an input shaft 21; a pair of pinion gears 43, 44 mounted to the input shaft 21; a closure braking rack 30 meshed with one pinion gear 43 before the sliding door is completely closed; and an opening braking rack 39 meshed with the other pinion gear 44 before the sliding door is fully opened and when the opened sliding door is closed. Predetermined rotation resistance is applied to the other pinion gear 44 in both rotation in a door opening direction and in a door closing direction so that braking force is applied to the sliding door in both of the door opening direction of the sliding door before fully opened and the door closing direction of the sliding door opened into a predetermined position.
