PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for producing a fatty acid ester, with which a fatty acid ester usable as substitute fuel is efficiently and continuously produced from a fatty acid raw material consisting mainly of a free fatty acid. SOLUTION: The method comprises mixing the fatty acid raw material consisting mainly of a free fatty acid with an alcohol, performing primary reaction at conditions of 250-350°C temperature and 15-25 MPa pressure at which conditions the alcohol is supercritical, removing low boiling components including water generated in the primary reaction step and excessive alcohol from the reaction liquid, adding alcohol to the low boiling component-removed reaction liquid, and performing again esterification reaction at conditions of 250-350°C temperature and 15-25 MPa pressure at which conditions the alcohol is supercritical. Or, the method comprises cooling the primary reaction liquid without removing the low boiling components generated in the primary reaction step, and reacting the cooled liquid again (second reaction).
