A fluid filter comprises a hollow cylinder of homogeneous yieldable resilient filter material lining a cylindrical foraminous non-yieldable screen and means for compressing the hollow cylinder against the foraminous screen over a restricted area which can be changed progressively. In Fig. 3, cleaning of foamed plastic filter elements 1 and 1a is effected by reversing the filtration flow while rotating rollers 15 and 15a around the filter so that they progressively compress filter elements 1 and 1a. The rollers are counterbalanced and are rotated by handle 26 via arms 60, and the elements 1 and la are mounted on metal screens 2 and 2a. Water to be filtered containing coagulant is introduced at 27, and filtered water leaves at 29 and 68. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the filter element (1) is rotated against a roller (19). The filtration flow reversal may be effected using a three-way valve. |
