Separating castings and molds from a stack of molding boxes comprises: removing the cope from a stack on a pallet (P); transferring the casting, with a small amount of adherent sand which has been subject to high thermal stress and any core sand, to a cooling shell (20); and removing the drag (1) and using an ejector (10) to remove sand from it. The casting is transferred by inverting the stack and no special grippers are required. Independent claims are included for two forms of apparatus for carrying out the method, in one of which the previously emptied stack is removed by a separate transfer unit to that which feeds in a full one, while in the other a single unit carries out both operations simultaneously.
