An air cushion vehicle 1 is supported upon a cushion 3 enclosed within a plenum chamber by a flexible, inflatable skirt 4 which may be adjusted to vary the cushion centre of pressure position with respect to the centre of gravity of the vehicle. The skirt comprises a membrane 5 anchored to the vehicle at 6 and secured at its free edge 7 to cords 14 connected at opposite sides of the vehicle by link member 9a actuated through pivoted lever 9b and rod 18 by an actuator 19 controlled manually or automatically to displace laterally the cushion boundaries and thereby the centre of pressure of the cushion relative to an axis 10 passing through the e.g. of the vehicle. It is stated that the membranes 5 may be moved inwardly or outwardly in unison to vary the area of the cushion and such variation in area may be effected in association with the previously described bodily lateral movement. In further embodiments (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the free edge of the membrane is carried by an adjustable roller and the lower part of the membrane is slotted to permit the escape of air to form an air curtain, air to inflate the membrane being delivered from a source other than the cushion. A vane for guiding the curtain air may extend downwardly from the slot in the membrane. In a still further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the profile of the membrane may be adjusted by a cord attached to its inner surface adjacent a curtain-forming slot and operated by a winch.</p> |
