A stable aqueous composition suitable for bleaching and sterilizing textile materials comprises peroxybenzoic acid or a substituted peroxybenzoic acid which does not contain groups which can be oxidized by peroxybenzoic acids, dissolved in a mixed solvent comprising water and tert-butyl alcohol in which the tert-butyl alcohol is present in a weight ratio relative to the water of up to 1 : 1 and in an amount sufficient to dissolve and stabilize the peroxy acid to form a homogenous solution. The solution may contain up to 12% by weight of the peroxybenzoic acid. The substituted peroxybenzoic acid may be o-, m- or p-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, p-tertiary butyl peroxybenzoic acid or p-methoxy peroxybenzoic acid. Impurities which cause decomposition of the peroxybenzoic acids or which can be oxidized by these acids, e.g. heavy metals, may be removed by distilling the tert-butyl alcohol in glass or glass-lined equipment or by the addition of about 100 p.p.m. of a metal chelating agent, e.g. dipicolinic acid.ALSO:A stable aqueous composition suitable for sterilizing textile materials, e.g. cotton, comprises peroxybenzoic acid or a substituted peroxybenzoic acid which does not contain groups which can be oxidized by peroxybenzoic acids, dissolved in a mixed solvent comprising water and tert-butyl alcohol in which the tert-butyl alcohol is present in a weight ratio relative to the water of up to 1:1 and in an amount sufficient to dissolve and stabilize the peroxy acid to form a homogenous solution.
