A pipe coupling having threaded coupling members generating axial and radial thrust includes a nipple having a grooved, preferably conical, peripheral surface 3 at one end and preferably a seal forming face 1 comprising either a rib 6 or a groove 5 at the other end, said nipple fitting around and sealing against a pipe 16 when the coupling members are connected. The grooves in the nipple may be radial, circumferential or disposed at an angle to the axis and may be rectangular, square, elliptical, circularly arcuate, triangular or polygonal in cross-section wherein the width of the lands between the grooves exceeds the width of the grooves. In various embodiments the grooved end 3 of the nipple may be compressed against a pipe by a tapered sleeve 17 (Fig. 1) axially moved by a nut 18 screwed on to a coupling member 21 having a slot 5 to co-operate with the rib 6 on the nipple, or the nut may have a tapered end surface to compress the grooved end of the nipple. The nut may screw on to or into the coupling member which may comprise a second pipe (Fig. 13) having a nipple compressed by a nut the two nipples having co-operating sealing faces, or the two nipples may be replaced by a composite nipple (Fig. 18, not shown) comprising two opposed conical portions joined base to base. In a further embodiment (Fig. 14) two pipes may be joined by flange members joined by threaded bolts. To ensure a stronger seal the tapered sleeve compressing one nipple member may have an integral nipple portion 10a (Fig. 15) which in turn is compressed by a tapered sleeve 6a. In a further embodiment the tapered sleeve carries a rib 5 (Fig. 8) which seals against the coupling member and the nipple is moved axially into the sleeve by the nut. Fig. 21 shows an embodiment wherein the nipple has a spherical outer surface, grooved at one end to aid in coupling pipes not in axial alignment.
