PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reading an image in a shorter time. SOLUTION: The image reader 100 comprises a conveyance section 1 for conveying documents set to a document tray; an image reading device 2 for reading image data from the document conveyed from the conveyance section 1; and shading operation sections (an image processing section 4, an exposure lamp unit 22, and a CCD 23) performing shading operation for correcting the image data read by the image reading device 2. The image reader 100 includes a document detection means (a document detection section 12) for detecting that the documents have been set on the document tray; and control means (a CPU 70, a non-volatile memory 72) for starting the shading operation by the shading operation section, when the documents are detected by the document detection means.
