The method involves acceleration sensor which is mounted in such a way that its measuring device is oriented parallel to the vertical axis of the vehicle which determines the measuring signal. The lateral position of the vehicle is detected by the measuring signal. The threshold value selected is smaller than the value of the acceleration due to gravity. An independent claim is also included for the device.
