A manually-operated pipette or dispenser dosing system forms part of an industrial liquid handling station or a laboratory work station, and incorporates a tool (1) with a programmable electronic memory (14). The system further has a tool fixture, a tool control unit and commensurate data transfer electrical contacts. The electronic memory is an EEPROM pre-programmed during manufacture and coated with paint during production. The EEPROM is fitted between a contact strip and the housing wall. The tool fixture with programmable electronic memory can be removed from the dosing system and substituted by another tool as required. The memory is pre-programmed with production-relevant data during manufacture and remains permanently with the tool. The memory further holds calibration quality requirements and mechanical correction data. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a method of using the above system.
