A modified polyoxymethylene is prepared by adding to trioxan at a temperature above its melting-point, a polyamide of solubility in trioxan at 75 DEG C. of more than 0-1% and subjecting the trioxan, in the solid state, to ionizing irradiation at a temperature at which polymerization occurs or at below polymerization temperature followed by polymerization at a raised temperature. The amount of polyamide used may be equal to that which gives a saturated solution in trioxan at 75 DEG C. e.g. approximately 1%. Polyamides which may be used are initially linear copolyamides which have been oxymethylated or etherified with cyclic alcohol, e.g. furfurol or benzyl alcohol, or polyamino amides obtained by the condensation of a dimer or trimer of an unsaturated fatty acid of at least 10 carbon atoms with a diamine or triamine and zein. The products may be acylated, e.g. using butyric anhydride and sodium acetate. |
