The system has a navigation module (16) with a function such as place determination and route computation, and a database (11) storing a point of interest such as airport and hotel. A man-machine interface (3) inputs a keyword for characterizing the point of interest and inputs a geographical figure. A search module (10) searches the point of interest assigned to the keyword in a geographical area defined and determined by the figure. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a database for a navigation system of a motor vehicle.
