It is intended to provide a phase-contrast film on which a double refractive layer having a different orientation direction can be directly formed. The surface of a polymer film showing double refractivity is subjected to polarized irradiation so that the surface of the film is exclusively oriented in a direction different from the orientation direction inside thereof. Thus, a phase-contrast film the surface of which is an oriented face is produced. Because of being a phase-contrast film also serving as an oriented film, a liquid crystal layer can be formed directly on the oriented face and oriented. Thus, a double refractive layer having a different orientation direction can be formed on the phase-contrast film.
