The invention compounds of the general formula wherein X represents Hal, -ONO2, -OCOR, -O.CO.NHR, -O.CO.NR(R1), O.CO.OR, -O.SO2.R or -OR, and Y represents H, Kt+, -R,-CO.R,-CO.NHR,-CONR(R1),-SO2R, in which Hal represents a halogen atom, Kt+ is a salt-forming cation, and R and R1, which may be the same or different, each represents a straight, branched-chain, or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group either unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, -NO2, -OH, -NH2, -CN, -COOAlkyl aryl, substituted aryl or -Q-Ar (where Q is a hetero atom and Ar is an aryl or substituted aryl group), or any such unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group the alkylene chain of which is interrupted by a hetero atom, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, provided that when X represents -O.CO.CH3, Y does not represent -CO.CH3. The novel compounds may be made by reacting a compound of the formula with an appropriate halogenating, esterifying or etherifying agent, and if desired (where a compound of Formula I in which Y is hydrogen is produced) reacting the compound so formed with a base or an etherifying or esterifying agent. The esterifying and etherifying agents may be alcohols, anhydrides or acid halides. The halogenating agent may be thionyl chloride or a phosphorus halide. The esterifying agent may be nitric acid, a mono- or di-alkylcarbamic acid halide, or a carbonic or thiocarbonic acid ester halide, an organic isocyanate, an acid halide of a phosphoric or thiophosphonic acid ester or an organic sulphonyl halide.ALSO:A pesticidal composition comprises, as active ingredient, one or more compounds of the general formula: wherein X is Hal; -ONO2; -OCOR; -OCONHR; OCONRR'; -O-CO.OR; -O.SO2.R; or -OR, and Y is H; Kt+; -R; -COR; -CONHR; in which groups Hal represents halogen; Kt+ represents a salt forming cation; and R and R' (which may be the same or different) each represents a straight, branched-chain or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group either unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, -NO, -OH, -NH2, -CN, -COO Alk, aryl, substituted aryl or -Q-Ar (where Q is a hetero atom and Ar is an aryl or substituted aryl group); or any such unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group the alkylene chain of which is interrupted by a hetero atom; or a substitued or unsubstituted aryl group; provided that when X represents the group -O.CO.CH3, Y does not represent the group -CO.CH3; together with a carrier or diluent. The composition may be in the form of a liquid composition, such as a solution, suspension or emulsion. The carrier in such cases comprises a solvent or a suspesion or emulsion base which may include a wetting dispersing or emulsifying agent. Solid compositions include dusts, wettable powders and pastes, in which the carrier comprises an inert solid material such as kaolin or kieselguhr. Compositions incorporating a gaseous carrier include aerosols. Other pest control agents may be included such as 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole or 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino triazine. The compositions have insecticidal, acaricidal, ovicidal, herbicidal or fungicidal activity.
