A surface resembling that of a metal foil having a high gloss is produced on a web of a carrier material such as paper, cardboard or a film by applying to the carrier material a coating composition containing not more than 30% of a subdivided metal in platelet form dispersed in an organic binding agent, passing the web over a heated moving surface having a high gloss with the coating of the web in contact with the said surface while avoiding relative movement between the carrier material and the said surface, and drying the coating while it is in contact with the surface. Metals mentioned are copper or aluminium bronzes. Suitable binding agents are vegetable or animal products such as starches or casein, or dispersions or solutions of film-forming plastics, or mixtures of natural and synthetic products. The heated moving surface may be the surfaces of a rotating metal cylinder having a high gloss produced say by a coating of dense, pore-free chromium plating. In the Example, a coating composition comprising finely-divided gold in platelet form, casein, a polyacrylate, a wetting agent, sulphated caster oil, caustic soda, trisodium phosphate, tributyl phosphate, sodium stearate and water at pH 9.5-10, was applied by rollers or a doctor to medium strength, sized paper. The coated surface of the paper was then immediately fed on to a chromium plated rotating cylinder heated to 90 DEG C and pressed thereon by rubber rollers. After the coating had dried, the paper was removed from the cylinder. |
