A dye mordanting composition comprises at least one hydrophilic organic colloid containing a finely-divided, uniform dispersion of particles of a hydrophobic salt of a non-wandering organic acidic compound containing free acid groups and a non-polymeric non-wandering organic cationic mordant for acid dyes. The composition may further include filter or antihalation dyes. Colloids mentioned are gelatine and polyvinyl alcohol and their derivatives, polyacrylamide and imidized polyacrylamide, colloidal albumin and ethanolamine cellulose acetate. Organic acidic compounds mentioned are stearic acid, di-n-amylphenoxy-butyric acid, long-chain alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, polymers containing <FORM:1059369/C3/1> groups and especially gelatin acylated with dicarboxylic acids such as phthalic, malonic, succinic, maleic, glutaric, suberic, azelaic and sebacic acids. Cationic mordants described are quaternary ammonium and phosphonium and ternary sulphonium compounds having a hydrophobic ballast group, i.e. a radical having a hydrophobic ballast group, i.e. a radical having at least 8 carbon atoms and a list of compounds is given including tetra-n-octylammonium bromide, 1:4-di-n-decyl-1:4 -diazabicyclo(2:2:2)octanium perchlorate, n-hexadecyl-triphenylphosphonium bromide and S,S-di - n - lauryl - S - methylsulphonium thiocyanate. The compositions are made by reacting the mordant and acid in solution in water, a water-miscible solvent or a low-boiling organic solvent to form a salt which is then blended with the colloid; by reacting a solution of mordant in an aqueous organic solvent with a solution of the acid in aqueous colloid, e.g. a partially phthaloylated or succinoylated gelatine, to give a dispersion direct; or by emulsifying a solution of a mordant dissolved in di-n-butyl phthalate, isopropyl alcohol ethyl acetate and water with an aqueous phthaloylated gelatine solution, the emulsion then being milled, gelled, dried to remove water and volatile solvents and redispersed with water.
