An I.C. engine air intake filter comprises an annular pleated filter element 14 in a two part housing 1, 10, the base of the housing having a circular opening whose rim 6 engages, through sealing gasket 8, a plate 7 which is attached by studs 28 to a carburettor or air inlet of a diesel engine, plate 7 having an air outlet (27) with a rounded inlet edge (32) (Figs. 3, 4, 6 not shown). Housing 1, 10 is attached to plate 7 by nut 9, 11 and bolt 12 and may be turned so that inlet 4, of tapered form, points in various directions. Between housing ports 1, 10 are clamped element 14 and a baffle 20, (21), 22 (Fig. 1, not shown) which together with inlet 4 and buffer chamber 23 forms a silencing chamber, air passing from inlet 4 along two arcuate passages before reaching the element 14. Baffle walls 20, (21) may be perforated. Heads of bolts 12, 28 are moulded into cast aluminium plate 7, which has a thick portion (31) around the outlet (27) and a thin portion reinforced by webs (30), the thin portion being either uppermost (Fig. 4) or lowermost (Fig. 2). Housing 1, 10 may be of sheet metal or plastics. |
