A scroll compressor including a housing having a compression mechanism and a motor disposed therein, rotatively coupled by a drive shaft. A crankcase is disposed in the housing and supports the compression mechanism. A brake element is operative ly engaged with the crankcase with at least one roller located therebetween. The roller has a first position relative to the brake element and the crankcase when the compressor operated in a forward direction, in which forward motion of the orbiting scroll member is unimpeded. At the onset of reverse rotation, the roller has an assumed second position relative to one of the brake element and the crankcase, in which the roller is in binding engagemen t with the brake element and the crankcase to arrest reverse motion of the orbiting scroll member.
