Method of determining conditions of grinding, at which a grinding scale is formed, includes the search of said modes at visual monitoring of the scale on the treated surface of billet by change and recording of the mode parameter, which influences the formation of scale. Said mode parameter is modified at other fixed mode parameters in such way that at two its values - min and max - the grinding scale is guaranteed to be or not to be formed respectively. The intermediate value of this parameter is fixed, which is equal to the arithmetic average value of two above mentioned values, and a new intermediate value of the parameter is defined.
