Headings B8C and B8H. Grippers 47 (Fig. 1) are moved horizontally and vertically by fluid-operated motors to stack or unstack crates or other articles. In the unstacking machine illustrated the grippers are carried by carriers 44, 45 and slit into and out of gripping position by linkages 42, 40 operated by hydraulic rams 38. The rams 38 are carried by walls 17, 18 moved vertically in guides 13, 15 by a chain-and-sprocket system driven by an hydraulic ram 32. The stack is brought to the machine by driven rollers 9 which also remove the lowermost crate when the remainder of the stack is supported by the grippers. The operation of the machine is controlled by limit switches detecting completion of each motion of the machine and adjustable for handling crates of different sizes. The horizontal and vertical motions of the grippers take place simultaneously and the relation between their speeds can be adjusted by throttles in the hydraulic circuits. The grippers may engage the crate walls themselves or may be received in slots in the walls. |
