In a pump or motor, the revolving cylinder block 90 is prevented from unseating from the valve plate 76 by a resilient metal ring 120 acting between a recess 116 in block 90 and an abutment 110 on a housing 40. Ring 120 is split at 122, Fig 2, and held against rotation by a pin 135. The dimensions of ring 120 may be such that it resiliently biases block 90 against valve plate 76. The cylinder block and valve housing assembly is slidable on a back member 30 by a piston 105, to vary the stroke, a pin 43 locating the assembly on track 30. Spring-loaded sleeves 61, Fig. 2, slidably engage track 30 to connect casing ports 11, 12 to valve plate ports 78, 79 Block 90 is coupled to drive flange 151 by ring gears 181, 185 for synchronous rotation. Connecting rod balls 172 are retained in drive flange 151 by resilient lip portions 173.
