A machine for laying and levelling road materials comprises a main frame 1, a subframe pivoted to it at 12, the rear end of the subframe carrying a screed and spreader unit 18a, 19 and being vertically adjustable relative to the main frame by means of screws 15 passing through nuts 17 secured to the main frame, the rear edge of the plate 19 being vertically adjustable by means of another screw device 78-80. The C-section screed 18a is in three sections each secured to the plate 19 which is reinforced by channel 20. A bridge piece linking the two outer sections is adjustable by a screw device to give the screed and thus the plate a cambered profile. The desired transverse grade of the road may be achieved by differentally rotating the screws 15. The nuts 17 may be directly secured to the main frame, or, as shown, to a bell crank lever 25-27 mounted on the frame and connected to an hydraulic ram 28, 29 which allows rapid high lift of the plate for transit of the machine. A hopper 59 has doors 64 controlled through linkage by handwheel 66. A vertically adjustable levelling bar 67 below the doors is pivotally mounted on the axis of the wheels 8. To the rear of the hopper is a triangular plough 49, 50 supported, for transverse oscillatory movement, by the main frame on a vertical spring-mounted pin 52 at the front and links at the rear end. Behind the plough is a feed, screws 42, 43 which directs material to the outer ends of the screed and spreader unit. A main engine 30 drives hydraulic pumps 32-34 which through independently controllable motors 35, 39 and 45 respectively drive the wheels 4, cause the plough to oscillate and rotate the feed screw.
