1,027,470. Waveguide seals. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 9, 1965 [Feb. 12, 1964], No. 5535/65. Heading H1W. An insulating window is sealed between two sections of waveguide in a vacuum-tight manner by milling an end of each section of the waveguide optically flat, placing a plate of the window material between these two ends, such that it covers the end apertures of the sections while its outer edge lies inside their outer periphery, and subjecting the assembly to pressure at an elevated temperature, such that the metal of the sectors both flows around the edge of the plate, and diffuses into the opposite section, to form a vacuum-tight joint. Flanges 2 and 4 of waveguide sections 1 and 3 are milled smooth to within 1 micron, the mica plate 5 is placed in position between them, and the whole subjected to pressure at 475‹ to 500‹ C. for 1 hour. The waveguides may be either circular or rectangular, and of copper, silver, gold, or aluminium.
