Pin-fall in a bowling alley is detected by operation of electric contacts or photo-electric means to generate a number of pulses which act through an appropriate computer which sets up the score on an indicator. According to the rules of bowls a master circuit 38 connects the pin-fall indicator 10 to one or more uniselector switches 14-26 and so to computers 28, 30, 32. Provision is made for league or open bowling and for bowlers playing in any sequence. The counting is effected by polarized relay circuits.
