An objective lens driving device (100) is provided with a lens holder (4), which holds an objective lens (1) to face a recording medium plane and is held to freely advance and retract to and from the recording medium plane. Inside the lens holder (4), a focus coil (5) is fixed to surround an optical axis of the objective lens (1). A driving force to advance and retract the lens holder (1) to and from the recording medium plane is generated by permitting a current to flow in the focus coil (5). Since the focus coil (5) is arranged inside the lens holder (4) to surround the optical axis of the objective lens (1), a movable part of the objective lens driving device (100) can be reduced in size and weight and high sensitivity can be achieved.
