<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus with self-checking function capable of hindering degradation of apparatus reliability and progressive deterioration by detecting abnormal sounds of the unit of the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a plurality of sound sensors for detecting the operating sounds of the apparatus and compares the pre-collected operating sounds of the apparatus and the newly-collected operating sounds, thereby discriminating the abnormal states of the apparatus and timing. The apparatus includes a first unit prescribing means for prescribing the abnormal unit from the result of the discrimination and a sequence table of operation sequences of the apparatus. Further, the apparatus also includes a second unit prescribing means for calculating the position of the emission of an abnormal sound from the abnormal timing and the sound sensors and prescribing the unit from a unit position table for the apparatus.
