PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetooptical recording and reproducing device which can improve characteristics of magnetic field modulation recording, and prevent damage to data on adjoining tracks by adjusting a laser beam and an applied magnetic field. SOLUTION: This device has a light radiator for irradiating a predetermined position on a magnetooptical recording medium with a laser beam, a magnetic field generator to apply a magnetic field corresponding to recording information to the recording medium, a light controller to instruct a light irradiation part of light intensity and a time to emit the laser beam, and a magnetic field controller to instruct the magnetic field generator of the light intensity and the direction to apply the magnetic field. When the recording information changes, the magnetic field controller gives an instruction to reverse the application direction of the magnetic field, and the light controller instructs the light radiator to make the laser beam intensity Pw1 for recording the information after the change larger than the intensity Pw2 which is irradiated when recording the 2nd and succeeding information if the same information continues, and to make the radiating time T1 of the laser beam of the intensity Pw1 shorter than the radiating time T2 of the laser beam of the intensity Pw2.
