PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape of a linear magnetic recording system having high track density by suppressing lateral tape motion. SOLUTION: A body to be treated (magnetic tape) 41 is made to run at e.g. 400 m/min speed in a direction A via guide rolls 47 and 47 between a feeding roll 45 and a winding roll 46 (a body to be treated running system 42). A polishing tape (lapping tape) 43 using an abrasive having 9μm particle diameter is transferred at e.g. 14.4 cm/min speed in a direction B (the same as the direction A) via a pushing roll 48 between a feeding roll 49 and a winding roll 50 (a polishing tape running system 44). The pushing roll 48 is pushed to a back coat layer side surface of the body to be treated 41 by a guide block from an upper part and the polishing tape 43 is brought into contact with back coat layer surface of the magnetic tape to perform polishing (lapping) treatment.
