PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus balance adjusting device capable of applying an external disturbance signal value according to characteristics of each disk recording medium. SOLUTION: Before focus balance adjustment, a small external disturbance signal is applied to a focus error signal, the value of the external disturbance signal is adjusted based on the tilting of a characteristic curve indicated by a data signal detected from a disk recording medium according to the application of the external disturbance signal, and focus balance is adjusted based on a characteristic curve detected by the application of the adjusted external disturbance signal, and a focus error signal.
