PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charger capable of preventing damage to the surface of an image carrier by a simple structure and easily cleaning a discharge member disposed near the surface of the image carrier. SOLUTION: The charger 40 includes a shield case 41 serving as a main body, a charge wire 42 serving as a discharge member, and a grid 43. The shield case 41 is disposed almost parallel to the axial direction of a photoreceptor drum 21 serving as an image carrier. The charge wire 42 and the grid 43 are so disposed as to stretch between both ends of the shield case 41. In addition, the charger 40 includes a cleaning member 46 for cleaning the grid 43 by moving in the stretching direction of the grid 43, and also includes a moving means 80 for the cleaning member 46. The charger 40 is designed such that the shield case 41 is inserted and supported in the rectangular holes 13 of the support members 11 so that the shield case 40 can be put in the position where it is in contact with the photoreceptor drum 21 and in the position where it is away from the drum 21.
