PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector whose light utilization efficiency is not largely lowered even in the case of obtaining smooth good-quality moving picture display. SOLUTION: In the projector, each of first small lenses 122 of a first lens array 120 has cross-sectional shape compressed in a y-axis direction. Then, the projector is equipped with a rotary prism 770 making illumination luminous flux scan along in the y-axis direction on an image formation region in synchronization with the screen writing frequency of a liquid crystal device between an illumination apparatus 100 and the liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G and 400B. The light emitting surface 118<SB>OS</SB>of a collimating lens 118 is constituted of a plane, and a reflection layer 119 is formed at both ends going along in the y-axis direction on the light emitting surface 118<SB>OS</SB>of the collimating lens 118.
